Paul McCarthy & Mike Kelly, |
White Trash, represented in an uncomfortable adaptation of Joanna Spyri's book and filmed in two halves in a very obviously artificial setting : on the one hand a Central European chalet and on the other the façade of the American bar in Vienna. Both continents's myths of purity are skilfully demolished in this uneasy film and TV imitation, in which mannequins used as stand-ins for the absent actors actually play the leading parts. Children's toys, pieces of scenery and props become ridden with subversive meanings which expose in great detail the sociopathology of everyday family life and the violent landscape of trauma on one or other side of the Atlantic. |
