Negativland & Landon Spearman, |
"Property is theft" is merely
one of the credo's of the San Francisco based radio
broadcasters and performance group Negativland. You could
say that trouble is
their medium. The quartet gained underground notoriety
for their found-audio collages, disseminated through
radio programs, live concerts and recordings. Their
recent legal misadventures began when they released a
record which parodied a song by rock superstars U2.
Island Records, U2's label, responded by suing
Negativland's record company, setting off a chain of
events that effectively suppressed the unauthorized
recording and crippled the group financially. That's what
you get for short circuiting the mass media ? Not to
worry, these sonic
outlaws fully recovered and are still going strong in
their not-a-music-video. And remember : "Copyright infringement is your best entertainment value !". |
