Peter Kubelka,
Austria, 1961-66,
13 min

A barely-veiled repugnance is expressed in this intense audio-visual work by Kubelka, composed from images he shot himself during a safari for rich Austrian tourists. The film-maker has, with an incisive irony, turned this commissioned work into an experimental portrait of the "natural" vulgarity of his hosts. Their triumphant attitude over the carcass of a slaughtered elephant and the abundant smiles they put on when posing next to the tribal chief, express the whole boastfulness of colonial domination. A meditation on cinematographic form, with far-reaching ideological consequences.
