In 1990 and 1991, Aileen Carol Wuornos, a 35 year old prostitute, killed seven men, all clients who had picked her up hitching. The FBI dubbed her "America's first female serial killer". Her life has already inspired four fiction films and other projects are in the offing. Nick Broomfield, veteran documentary filmmaker reputed for his ability to go where no one else can, burrowed through the mountains of falicious evidence to set a detailed portrait of Aileen Wuornos. Among the more scandalous facts he uncovered was a police plot : one month before arresting Aileen, police officers offered to sell Hollywood exclusive rights to their investigations. The director also learned that anyone who wants to approach Aileen Wuornos has to pay up first and grease the palms of a horde of lawyers and well-intentioned friends. The criminal became a pawn on the chessboard of greed. By exposing the mechanisms of sensationalism, Broomfield bares the true face of Aileen, both culprit and victim. |
