France has changed, but nonetheless it has remained France. For the French, the fear of Americanization persists. They want EuroDisney, but with a French accent. Still, the American model of a New World has always been a kind of mirror in which the French saw their reflection. By inventing a totally materialistic and vulgar America, the French distanced themselves from the New World and so confirmed their superiority. They hoped to be the negative image of their caricature of the Americans. That is why the French have often asserted themselves as the opposite of Americans. That is also why the French identity was linked to individualism, to humanism, to good taste, to scepticism and above all to civilisation, all the qualities the Americans were supposedly deprived of. According to Richard Kuisel, American specialist of France approved by Joe Dassin, French singer.
